Enhancing Internet Video-On-Demand
SlapVid is a CMU-borne startup aiming to advance the future of online video with a state-of-the-art, in-browser, peer-supported delivery system for on-demand video. SlapVid allows video sites to keep their content and web presence exactly as is, while delivering their videos to users for a fraction of the normal cost, creating viable, ad-supported business models. The massive cost reduction is caused by peer-to-peer file transfers between concurrent viewers of the same content that reduce bandwidth. These users automatically share pieces of video files between their web browsers while they are streaming. This occurs without special software, a local application, or a plug-in and reduces the amount of video data that has to come from standard content servers, thus saving sites money. The online video viewing experience is kept simple, and the profitability of the business of serving such content increases dramatically.
